Nagu Academy was founded with the vision of having everyone experience the joy and inspiration embodied in Indian music, culture, and heritage. ‘Nagu’ literally means ‘smile/laughter’ in Kannada and encapsulates the feeling of happiness associated with music. The academy aims at spreading happiness through music.
Music plays a huge role in everyone’s life. For some, it is a way to grow their talent, for some, it is a career, for some, it is an interest or a hobby, and for some, it is a stress buster.

Smrithi is a Carnatic classical vocalist and a Light vocalist based in Bangalore, India. She is a disciple of Ganakalashree Vidushi Smt Kalavathy Avadooth and Guru Smt Supriya Raghunandhan.
Her inspiration to start this academy came from her late paternal aunt – Nagalakshmi who was also a very talented musician, dancer, and artist. Nagalakshmi, fondly called NAGU always had high ambitions and wanted to achieve a lot. The name Nagu holds a very special place in Smrithi’s heart and this academy is a tribute to her family. Nagu, (read as nuh-gu or ನಗು) also means ‘smile/laughter’ in Kannada and captures the happiness associated with music.
As a young instructor, Smrithi believes that each learner is different – their pace and way of learning varies. Connecting with them on a personal level and giving them complete attention brings out the best in them and allows her to mold them perfectly.
Although she holds a degree in Civil Engineering, she realized that this was her life’s calling. She fell in love with teaching and now teaches students from across the globe and has dedicated her life to the arts.
What our students say
Nitya Narasimhan
Smrithi is a very diligent and empathetic teacher. Her work ethic and organization skills are conveyed through the way she teaches her other students and I. Not only is she responsible, but connects with us and makes sure we understand the meaning of the songs she teaches. Learning with her is a pleasure and has helped me connect with my emotions and roots
Tanvi Iyengar
Hi I’m Tanvi Iyengar and I’m 13. I’m in 7th grade at Fallon middle school in California. I love this class because it’s self-paced and there’s no need to rush. It’s a lot of fun with learning. Smrithi gives us tips and tricks to achieve what we need. The song choices are also good and sometimes we can choose the song we want to learn. Since the classes are one on one, we get to openly discuss a lot of things and we get the right kind of attention. This class is very delightful!

Netra Narasimhan
Hi my name is Netra and I am 11 years old attending light music classes at The Nagu Academy. My teacher Smrithi is really nice and helps me and other students learn how to sing better and better. She adapts to our different ways of learning and teaches us according to that. I have been learning with Smrithi since I was 9 and she has taught me many different songs. She has taught me popular Movie songs like Kaisi Paheli Zindagani and Samajavaragamana. I enjoy learning Movie songs and she makes it very easy and fun to learn. She has also taught me very meaningful Bhavageethes such as doora bahu doora, amma ninna yedeyaaladalli and many more. She teaches us devotional songs that everyone enjoys listening to. She is a really good teacher and makes learning a lot of fun!
